    The author examines the first season of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic episode by episode, offering analysis and theories about the show's unusual popularity and fan base. The author compares the development of the show to concurrent sociopolitical and cultural events and to various philosophical traditions. The author is clearly a fan of My Little Pony, and his affection for it comes across in the generally relaxed, conversational tone of the essays. He does not hesitate to call the developers of the show to task when he believes they have made errors, though; for example his analysis of the show's handling of racial issues. In all, this is an excellent guide for both fans of the cartoon and for anyone who wonders how a cartoon designed to sell toys to eight-year-old girls developed a following among adolescents and adults.
